    Team Physician
Profession:
Medical Director , Chicago Fire Soccer Team
Education
  • M.P.H., University of Illinois School of Public Health, 1997
  • M.D., University of Veracruz in Xalapa, Mexico

Dr. Gilberto Munoz combined his two lifelong passions of soccer and medicine into his current profession. Munoz grew up in Mexico watching soccer and wanting to be a doctor, but he didn't expect to become a doctor for a professional soccer team. Now, as the medical director of the Chicago Fire Soccer Team, Munoz is captain of his own team of 35 physicians that tend to the players' health. He says that injuries that would have ended careers 10-15 years ago can be treated thanks to advances in sports medicine.

A soccer team like Chicago Fire requires all kinds of medical staff to keep the team healthy. The staff includes orthopedic physicians, a neurologist, podiatrist, dentist, and chiropractor. The team also has an acupuncturist, massage therapist, physical therapist, and nutritionist.
