GUEST: My great-great uncle hosted Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 at his Hazelton farm, and over the years, it went to my relatives.
Passed down to my grandfather, to my father, and then to me.
APPRAISER: This cane is like lots of canes from this era of American history.
Gold-filled top with an ebony shaft and with an inscription on the top indicating why it was given, to whom it was given, and usually when it was given.
This cane is engraved "To President Roosevelt, from the colored citizens of Keokuk, Iowa.
October 1, 1907."
As it happens, not only did he visit on that day, he kicked off a tour of the western states on that day.
And October 1, 1907, was dubbed President Roosevelt Day in Keokuk, Iowa.
He was part of a large parade through the middle of the town, and he gave a speech during that day that is actually widely available now.
While the knob looks gold, it's not; it's gold-filled, so there's some metal inside there that the gold is laid on top of and then engraved.
Based on the inscription on the knob of the cane, we know that it's made around 1907.
What's most interesting about the cane, of course, is that inscription.
Among Presidents, Teddy Roosevelt is certainly one of the most collected, so a cane like this, were it not for that inscription, might be worth $50.
Because it has a direct inscription to Teddy Roosevelt, and also because we can track its history from that moment on, October 1, 1907, all the way to you, we'd put an auction estimate on this cane of $2,500 to $3,500 dollars.
