It was created by my husband's great-grandfather Glen Christian.
APPRAISER: Okay.
GUEST: We inherited these years ago, and up until 2014, we believed that Glen Christian had just a wild life.
He was born in Chicago to German parents.
They immigrated to Indiana, then they moved to Nebraska, and he ran away from home and joined a circus, and that's where he learned to do ventriloquism.
Well, we found out in 2014 it was a big fat lie.
His name was actually George Redgate.
He was born in Nebraska.
He he had eight siblings.
George grew up and made a lot of bad decisions.
He ended up having four marriages and he was sent to prison for four months for adultery.
APPRAISER: Good thing they don't do that now.
GUEST: Good thing they don't do that now.
(laughter) He passed away in 1952.
He was an inventor, and he was a ventriloquist, and he could throw his voice and he used to terrorize his grandkids with this marionette.
APPRAISER: Well, he's he's got so much personality.
GUEST: Oh yeah, and you make... APPRAISER: I can...
GUEST: ...open his mouth.
APPRAISER: I couldn't imagine.
(voices marionette): "Oh hi, how you doing there Shirley?"
(laughter) I would say that he really treasured this because it is in such good condition.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: He's really cool.
Someday, somebody needs to untangle all those wires and...
GUEST: ...well... APPRAISER: ...figure out how he...
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: ...how he did used it.
Have you ever had it appraised before?
GUEST: No, I haven't.
APPRAISER: Okay, well, we talked about it at the folk art table, and we think this would probably be in the $2,000 to $3,000 range.
GUEST: Okay, that seems realistic.
Yeah.
APPRAISER: Probably probably more sentimental value.
GUEST: It's absolutely more sentimental and it'll be handed down to our son and then to his oldest son.
