Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: My father had a pharmacy in the south side of Chicago.
During prohibition, I guess, he sold bourbon for medicinal uses in these medical type bottles.
I don't know why he saved them, APPRAISER: [chuckles] GUEST: but he saved about a case of them, and eventually he gave them to me and my sister and we divided them up.
APPRAISER: Well, you, you brought six with you today.
The O.F.C Distillery, or Old Fashioned Copper, was founded actually in 1870 by a man named Colonel Taylor, and he was a visionary in the world of making bourbon.
From Kentucky.
He used a lot of copper tubing, copper-lined vats and was very interested in pure ingredients and quality control.
He became known for his excellence in distilling and was really setting the standard for, for other folks to follow.
He actually sold that company in 1878 to a man named George T. Stagg who was the person that distilled this particular set of bourbon.
These were done in 1917 right before prohibition started in 1920, and then they were actually bottled in 1933 when prohibition was basically ending.
So they had 16 years of percolating in, in their environment.
George T. Stagg was also a visionary.
He innovated climate control in, in the distillery.
And Stagg was one of the few distilleries that had a government permit in order to make whiskey during prohibition.
And the reason this says for medicinal purposes only because that's the only way you could get any kind of alcohol during prohibition.
Then in 1992, the George T. Stagg Distillery was sold to Buffalo Trace, which many connoisseurs of American whiskey and bourbon will know because they really are a top brand in the market.
Because of that, this rises above the general kind of whiskey from the early time period.
We have three bottles out of the boxes and we can see that the level on them are all different.
GUEST: Mhmm APPRAISER: There are some, evaporation happens over time, but there's also important the color should be this wonderful kind of caramelly color.
It really is almost by an individual basis collectors would grade these but we can say for sure because of the, the brand and the distillery that they're from that they would be met with active engagement by collectors.
If I had to throw kind of a broad auction estimate on the six bottles.
So you're looking at anywhere in the low end from $12,000 to the high end of $30,000 for the six bottles GUEST: For the six.
And so I have probably another six at home and it would depend on the levels and the color APPRAISER: [chuckles] Right.
GUEST: as to what their value would be.
APPRAISER: Correct.
Collectors and connoisseurs are, just like wine people, are very picky about how things look, the level, the level of the liquid, condition of the boxes, etc.
