Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: My father-in-law recently died and in going through his things, there was a box that said "camp" on it.
APPRAISER: So summer camp we're essentially thinking correct?
Something like that.
GUEST: Summer camp, I think so.
APPRAISER: Everything you have here in front of you is from the Golden Age of comics.
The Golden Age of comics was 1938 to 1956.
The five books that you have here on the board are all published by DC Comics.
DC Comics literally taking its name from this book here, Detective Comics.
GUEST: Oh.
APPRAISER: DC Comics was the advent of modern era superheroes.
GUEST: Oh.
APPRAISER: So, prior to Action Comics 1 and the creation of Superman in 1938, there were no superheroes.
Closest to you on the top row, we have Adventure Comics 53.
In terms of condition, this book is really rough.
For the world of Adventure Comics, it's not the greatest bit of deal.
That book alone would be a $300 to $500 comic.
Next on the docket, we'll tackle both at the same time.
Detective Comics 43 and 55.
Batman first appeared in Detective Comics 27.
So when we're looking at Detective Comics, this is only 16 issues removed from his first appearance.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: So this is very early for the history of Batman.
Both books here, iconic covers by Bob Kane.
Bob Kane, the creator of Batman.
Now, the 43 is a little bit on the rougher side.
Grade wise, it's around a 2.0 to a 2.5.
The Detective Comics 55 is your nicest book condition wise.
That book numerically would grade to be around a 5.0 to a 5.5.Both of these comics would be estimated $1,000 to $2,000 at auction.
GUEST: Oh my.
Oh my, mhmm.
APPRAISER: Getting down here, Action Comics 16.
Your earliest comic, September 1939.
Cool part about this, Action Comics 1 from June 1938 is your first appearance of Superman.
GUEST: Oh.
APPRAISER: So this is only 15 books removed from the first appearance of Superman.
Super rough condition.
I mean you can see the cover is totally split.
The spine's totally split, but it's all intact.
Has all the pages.
That book again, easily a $1,000 to $2,000 comic.
But this is my favorite bad boy of the pile right here.
More Fun Comics Issue 58.
This is quintessential Golden Age comic art.
Bernard Baily is the cover artist here.
Torture bondage scene.
You know, he's wrapped up on a table.
GUEST: [chuckling] APPRAISER: You have this crazy sickle thing coming down.
Inspector's trying to jump in there to get it.
Condition-wise, again, it has that wave from being stored improperly, but it's intact.
The cover's attached.
This book at auction in today's market because Golden Age comics are so hot, easily a $2,000 to $4,000 comic.
GUEST: Oh my.
APPRAISER: So cumulatively when we add everything up $5,300 to $10,500.
GUEST: Ah!
Boy.
You know I, it's poignant.
I'm a reading teacher and the idea that this comes from someone loving to read is, touches me.
