Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipAPPRAISER: You brought us in this Heisman Memorial Trophy Award program from 1939.
GUEST: Correct.
APPRAISER: What's so special about it, it is one of Iowa's greatest athletes and 1939 Heisman Trophy winner, Nile Kinnick.
GUEST: Correct.
My great uncle was friends with Nile Kinnick when he's in a fraternity brother at the University of Iowa.
He gave it to me before he passed away and he gave us the book of Hero Parish.
It was Nile Kinnick's diary.
Inside the book was this program and for 59 years my dad didn't know it, my grandfather didn't know it.
This is his fraternity picture.
So Nile Kinnick is right here on the end and three people away is my uncle.
APPRAISER: Nile Kinnick of course is one of the great names in Iowa athletic history... GUEST: Sure.
APPRAISER: ...and in college football history.
In 1935, the first Heisman Trophy was awarded for the most outstanding player in college football.
Nile was the fifth winner and the first from Iowa.
But what made Nile so special was that when Nile Kinnick did it all... GUEST: Correct APPRAISER: ...at Iowa, he was the halfback.
That was his most specific position, but he was also the team's passer.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: He also played defense.
APPRAISER: Today, they would never do that.
They'd make him be either a running back or a quarterback.
Beyond the fact that he played virtually every minute in every game... GUEST: Correct.
APPRAISER: ...from Iowa his senior year.
Nile Kinnick was 5'8 and 170 pounds.
GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: And beyond that, he was a great speaker.
He was a great student.
He was Phi Beta Kappa.
He straight A's.
At his Heisman presentation in 1939... GUEST: Mm-hmm APPRAISER: ...he actually spoke.
One of the lines he said was that he was so happy to have been born in America GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: ...because they had football fields whereas in Europe they only had battlefields.
GUEST: Correct.
APPRAISER: So how ironic that four years later he he's enlisted in the Navy.
He becomes a pilot and his plane goes down in a training mission in the Caribbean Sea and he dies.
His legacy still lives on.
GUEST: Oh yes.
APPRAISER: The University of Iowa stadium was renamed Kinnick Stadium.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: And before every football game they play a clip from his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech.
Given the fact of the signature, even though it's personalized to your uncle, it also gives the provenance.
I'd put an auction estimate of 8,000 to 12,000.
GUEST: Wow, cool.
Well, that's that's something that's a good legacy that my uncle left me.
You know, I mean, honestly, just the fact that they were friends is the most important thing to me.
APPRAISER: I'd insure it for $20,000.
GUEST: Okay, that's awesome.
