Spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
And I've had them for the last 50 years.
I used to be in the antique business, my husband and I, and we were thumbing through a local newspaper and saw the Four Seasons advertised and we were familiar with him.
I questioned whether it could be these.
When we arrived at the people's house and walked into their house, they were on their wall and we both were amazed that it APPRAISER: Alphonse Mucha was arguably the single greatest Art Nouveau artist of the year.
In fact, Art Nouveau is often referred to as Listil Mucha, Mucha style.
They named the form after him and this is sort of a, a masterwork of his artistry.
Mucha was very famous for the advertising posters that he did.
He worked with a printer in Paris called Champenois.
And Champenois realized right out of the gate this was an artist with such extraordinary talent and such incredible potential that to limit his skill to just designing posters for rolling paper or for bicycles would be a waste of his ability.
GUEST: Correct.
APPRAISER: So Champenois, the printer, licensed Mucha to make more than posters.
The printer, Champenois, used Alphonse Mucha to design decorative panels.
This was the first series of decorative panels that Mucha designed for the printer.
And this series of decorative panels was so popular, all of a sudden people in Paris, who hadn't been able to afford oil paintings were able to buy these lithographic paintings and decorate their homes relatively inexpensively.
This series was designed in 1896.
His designs were were these brooding, beautiful women in sort of theatrical poses.
Oh, my little cold bird.
Drink the grapes in the fall.
And each one is sort of clad in a revealing and a secret way, hiding something, showing the other.
This man, the printer, was as clever as a marketer, as Mucha was as an artist.
And he began to license Mucha's images out.
And he licensed them to home decorators.
He licensed them to fabric printers.
So these were most likely not printed by Champenois.
And I say that for two reasons.
One, the printer's name appears nowhere.
The second reason is Mucha's signature appears nowhere.
These were licensed to a company who used the images to print decorative affordable art for the homes.
The original series printed in 1896 on paper.
We have no reason to believe that these were printed that much later.
They could be 1897, but just because they were outsourced and licensed to another company, they're still from the same era.
So these are roughly the mid 1890s.
APPRAISER: Several times these have come up for auction and the Four Seasons in this kind of good condition at auction, I would estimate these four as a group between 12,000 and $18,000.
GUEST: That's awesome.
That is really awesome.
They're beautiful.
