I found it at an auction, and I found out it was sitting in an attic for 50 years.
And I know nothing about it.
APPRAISER: So how long ago did you acquire it?
GUEST: About six years, right before my nieces were born.
And they enjoy sitting in it and, uh, reading books.
APPRAISER: What did you have to pay for it?
I know you were struggling with the decision.
GUEST: Oh, god.
I was but I dished out $800 for it.
APPRAISER: This is certainly what we would call a black forest bear child's chair.
When people think about the black forest, they often think about the black forest in Germany.
But the actual craft of black forest carving was created in, uh, Brienz Switzerland.
And then there's also cabinet makers that would follow the tradition in Germany.
And this was done starting in the 1800s, and you'll often find characters of the forest.
You'll find foliage, you got great bears, and this was the type of object a wealthy family wanted to own.
It sort of symbolized prosperity.
I love the details here, I mean you start with a glass eye, the fur, the way it's beautifully carved.
I love the little bear claw holding on to the top of the, the arm support.
I looked it over, sometimes you'll find signatures.
I didn't see a signature on this.
In terms of of dating, it's around the turn of the century.
This started to become really popular in the Victorian, late Victorian era, so 1860, 70, 80, and, and progressed.
In terms of condition, it's really good.
I mean, you got a wear on the front seat, which is what you'd expect.
But all in all, it's a wonderful example and I just love the fact that you said "Oh, your nieces sit on here, love it, and read the stories."
I mean, this is what it was made for.
GUEST: Nice.
APPRAISER: So you had to pay $800 for it?
GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: Do you regret the decision, or no?
GUEST: No I love it.
APPRAISER: That's awesome.
GUEST: It's so cool, I can't hate it.
APPRAISER: In terms of value, if this were to come to auction, you know, I would expect it to bring between $1,000 and $3,000.
GUEST: Nice.
APPRAISER: Yeah, it's a good, good score right?
GUEST: Good investment.
APPRAISER: Up top.
You got a great eye.
Might have to pass it down to your nieces if they love sitting reading the books on it.
GUEST: Absolutely.
