Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: I found underground films and John Waters in, like, the early 70s.
Going into college, everybody had heard about Pink Flamingos.
We'd never seen it.
We actually formed an art club so we could rent the film.
Watching that film several times, and all this other stuff, really pushed me into the career path I took, which was theater design, film design, and finally museum design.
APPRAISER: John Waters inspiring young men around the country.
Where did these individual pieces come from?
GUEST: This is a subway poster from San Francisco that I got at a record exchange.
This, I bought online.
And then this is kind of the most recent one.
When John Waters, he did an exhibit of his own artwork at the Baltimore Museum of Art, these were like at every bus stop in Baltimore.
APPRAISER: When I was growing up in the 1980s, we went to see Pink Flamingos.
It was playing at an art house in New York, The Thalia.
And then in 2015, I was doing a benefit auction in New York, and I got to meet John Waters.
You know, I love these posters.
They're very meaningful.
So going through them, starting with one closest to me from the museum.
We call this an exhibition poster, and exhibition posters as people exit through the gift shop this is what they tend to bring with them.
And they can buy them cheaply because they're produced in such large numbers by the museum.
They tend not to have a whole lot of value, so frankly finding this for sale somewhere for $50 now wouldn't surprise me.
And if you ask me, will it ever go up in value?
I don't think it will.
In the middle we have Divine, Harris Glenn Milstead, we should say.
Phenomenal performer, star of stage and screen, great friend of John Waters.
They say John Waters actually gave her her name.
GUEST: Yes.
APPRAISER: Taken from a Jean Genet book.
The original poster for the show was substantially smaller than this, it was about about yay big, and that poster sells for around $400.
GUEST: Oh.
APPRAISER: This is an enlargement of the original...
GUEST: ...right APPRAISER: ...which makes it fantastically decorative, which makes it almost life-size although divine was a little larger, to be fair.
But value-wise it's probably in the $75 to $100 range.
To me, the star of the trica, is the pink flamingos poster.
I spent a long time trying to figure out why it would be in French on top and English everywhere else.
GUEST: Right.
APPRAISER: I was able to find out that Jean-Pierre Jackson was a distributor in France, worked a lot with Russ Meyer and some other some other filmmakers.
But it's obviously, it's a great image.
It is an original poster, as opposed to the one in the middle.
It was made in smaller numbers than the exhibition poster, and to the best of my knowledge, when it comes up for sale, at auction you could expect it to sell for between $700 and $1,000.
GUEST: Really?
Oh, cool excellent.
Didn't expect that.
