GUEST: ...in Eastern Iowa.
And he had a friend who was a photographer...
GUEST: ...who took a lot of photos of jazz musicians... APPRAISER: Mm-hmm.
GUEST: ...and knew Pat Patrick... APPRAISER: Mm-hmm.
GUEST: ...who was in Sun Ra's Arkestra.
Pat Patrick passed away, his mother was still alive and selling some of his memorabilia.
So, my father, my uncle, and a friend went to the sale, saw this headdress, was $100, and they decided to split it three ways.
APPRAISER: Yeah.
GUEST: My dad had cancer at the time and so they let him keep it at our house.
When he passed away, my mom has kept it since as a kind of a memento.
APPRAISER: Mm-hmm.
GUEST: ...and then, I have it now in my dining room.
APPRAISER: So have you ever listened to Sun Ra?
GUEST: Yes.
APPRAISER: What's your take on him?
GUEST: Galactic.
(laughter) APPRAISER: I mean, Sun Ra is a very interesting figure in the world of jazz.
In the 1950s, he started playing doo-wop and other uh forms of jazz, but in the 19, late 50s, early 60s, he went to more cosmic style of jazz.
And he was a little bit out there.
He said that he was actually not from Earth but from Saturn.
Sun Ra probably wore this headdress on half dozen albums.
Um we've seen photos of him wearing headdresses like this at a couple of different concerts.
But, you know what, he was most known for wearing it in was a movie called "Space is a Place."
That was a 1974 film.
Because of its appearance in so many, on so many covers, at so many concerts, it is probably the second most associated headdress he wore, most being his uh big Egyptian one...
GUEST: Yes.
APPRAISER: ...with with the globe on top.
We tend to see that in his later years, in the late 60s early 70s, for the most part.
This is made from a butcher's apron, which was traditionally made of steel or aluminum discs that were pierced and linked together to protect butchers when they were, you know, slicing up meat.
We don't know if it's the actual one he worn in a couple of his albums, but it's the exact same style.
It's a beautiful piece, and I think, at auction, I put an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000 on it.
GUEST: Wow.

GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: I absolutely love it.
