>>There's a phrase used by all Virginia tribes that "we're still here 'cause we never left."
And that is so true.
(upbeat drumming music) (singers ululating) >>You know, I hear this slogan, Take America Back.
Native people aren't gonna take it back.
We're gonna take it forward.
We've gotta move forward with determination and tell our story.
(upbeat drumming music continues) >>All right.
You guys ready to go to work?
>>Yeah.
(person chuckling) >>I was sort of told by my grandfather and I was sort of told by my mom, you know, they always would say that, you know, there's certain children that you can tell that that's their job.
They're gonna be cultural keepers, you know?
They're gonna be responsible for passing on the history.
(upbeat drumming music continues) >>Everything that makes Indigenous cultures unique is inside of us, and we just need to bring that back out.
>>Three and two and one, go high.
>>These are instruments of a sport, but in the right hands, it becomes more.
This thing becomes a tool for revitalization in itself.
>>Mama, we won!
>>Yeah.
>>One of the great joys that I have in life is seeing our young people become engaged, trying to carry on with the tradition that was left to me that I tried to carry on.
Those things make me look back and say, "The things you have sacrificed, it's worthwhile."
(upbeat drumming music continues) >>When I'm gone, my kids and my grandkids will be able to come here and know that this is where all of the political fight took place for our identity so that we could grow up and be the sovereign nation that we are.
>>So here you are, you're in the Interpretive Center for the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia.
When we know our own history, that brings us beyond this era of not having identity.
It brings us into another freedom, a freedom of feeling that we can say who we are.
(upbeat drumming music continues) (singers singing in foreign language) (singers ululating)
