This segment introduces the original purpose of the Richardson Olmsted Campus as the Buffalo State Asylum. Following the Civil War, Buffalo sees economic growth and a rise in population. Frederick Law Olmsted, Calvert Vaux, and H.H. Richardson begin designing the 42 acre campus and 13 buildings. Medina sandstone is brought through the Erie Canal for use in the Richardsonian Romanesque architecture
