It's that time of year.

Candy, costumes and checking out really creepy places.

Halloween is just a week away, and if you're in the mood to be scared OnQ contributor Dave and Dave have found a local haunted house that's generating national attention.

[Music Plays] My name is Scott Simmons and we are at the ScareHouse in Etna.

ScareHouse is a haunted house, but it's not like what most people think of when they think of Haunted House.

When most people think of a haunted house, I think they still think of the cliche of black walls.

12 year old kids in masks.

You know something that's thrown together in a couple of weeks?

This is a really elaborate production that is overseeing.

It's a family business and it's something that we start working on in February every year.

We put a huge amount of detailed work into it, take a lot of inspiration from theme parks and the larger budget movies and things, because to us, what's really interesting is to create not just scenes, but actual characters.

You like a job?!

Very short term position, I assure you.

So all of that detail, all of that time put into each individual scene, does that really heighten the level of scariness?

When this place is working?

It should feel like you are the stars of your own horror movie, and it really is just like just like a horror movie.

You're with bunch of people, they've all been plucked off, and it's just down to you and those 5 or 6 people that you're going through the haunted house with.

And the thing we strive to do as much as possible is keep it as realistic as possible.

And the more details and the more theming you can do to sort of eliminate anything, the distract and pop them out of it, the scarier it's going to be.

Because now it's not just all I'm in a set that so many builds.

You really feel like you're in this heavily detailed environment and you're interacting with these adult big characters, and that's what makes it so scary.

[Music Plays] Tell us about this building, Warren.

This is a great building.

It dates back to the early 1900s.

It was around 1920 when the Etna Elks took it over.

And everyone we know from this area has probably been in here at some point, either going to a wedding or parties or bar mitzvahs and things.

And why we love this building so much is you're always finding stuff in here that you would never expect.

It's like a hearty basement.

Sometimes you open a door and there's a stairwell.

And where could that possibly go?

There's just something you can't put on paper about being in a building like this.

[Screaming] So how many people work here?

And I assume the makeup is a little more elaborate than just throwing a mask on?

Yeah This year, our cast is really grown.

There are at least 60 people on cast, 65 on our busier nights.

What we really tried to do is we will create actual icon characters who actually have 7 or 8 characters who are featured really prominently.

[Screaming] And they're the ones who get very elaborate makeups a very elaborate costume design.

[Scream] [Clapping] We have three haunted houses within one scare house.

The first one, which we cal Hall of Nightmares, is very much influenced by tales from th crypt, Creepshow, the old school horror movies, but a little bit of humor, a little bit of dark humor, just like you'd expect in those old tales from the crypt comic books.

Delirium!

The next haunt, delirium 3D, which is new for this year, is very hard to describe.

It doesn't make a lot of sense, and that's kind of the point.

Hey, did I tell you I was having a party?!

Welcome to it!

That's when we created this character, delirium.

And she's influenced by everything from cyberpunk to techno goth to Japanese anime to a lot of music that I don't even understand.

Here, take these glasses.

The 3D glasses will protect your eyes, but your brain may never be the same.

[Laughing] It's a 3D haunted house, which means you actually put on 3D glasses because it's very tricky.

I don't know how to say it.

The boss is back there and then scream the last time.

Very dark very modern, very realistic, and just a totally different vibe from all of them.

Right this way.

And me.

Sir, I think that on your way out, it's the one that probably feels the most like contemporary horror movies and is a much more sort of darker graphic one.

And that's also the one where you see the most people running, screaming, crawling, crying, and then coming back in.

I don't get it, but, [Laughing] So what do you want people to take away from this place when they leave here?

We really want people to be entertained when we're here.

At the end of the day, it's about entertainment.

I think sometimes with haunted houses, people forget that.

They think it's all just about scaring the people and making them uncomfortable.

To me, a good time at a haunted house, you know, you're startled and you laugh and the laugh comes just as quickly.

[Laughing] It fires off all that adrenaline, and it really is.

It's the same reason why people, you know, bungee jump or go on a roller coaster.

It makes you feel alive.
