Learn about the historic Transylvania University.

Transylvania University was established in Danville and was the first institution of higher learning west of the Alleghenies. As Lexington became a city, it sought to attract Transylvania from Danville to improve the quality of life for its townspeople. This school would play a key role in the growth of Lexington as well as have a major role in the development of the University of Kentucky.
