[music playing] Southwest Missouri has some of the most unpredictable weather in the country.
And when you're farming, like, you're always looking at the weather.
I check the weather 20 times a day on my phone.
So you're always having to worry about is the crop going to get flooded out, or are we going to lose it because we have a drought?
And we have a very small amount of topsoil in Southwest Missouri, so we decided we're going to try to not do any cultivation, because we get a big three-inch rain, and it all washes down the drain.
The weather here definitely makes it unique, I think, compared to different areas in the country.
We got really warm in January and February.
The soil heats up.
That causes your trees to come out of dormancy.
So we ended up blooming almost a month early.
Our peaches were at a sensitive stage, and so we lost probably about 50% to 60% of those.
Our peach trees were almost in full bloom the second week of March, and we prefer them to be in full bloom about mid-April.
We have a lot of late freezes in general, April freezes, so it's kind of scary when things start blooming in March.
I probably lost 90% to 100% of my crop the last five out of six years when it comes to peaches.
The weather is always changing for us.
The last few years, we're having wetter springs.
It's harder to get a planting window to get out in the field.
But the benefit as well is, we have these beautiful, long falls now that our harvests have been great.
But as soon as I say that, we'll have a really wet fall and we'll have a dry spring.
And I guess my point is, don't try to outguess the weather, because you never will.
There's always a flood.
There's always a drought.
It's never-ending.
There's always something.
The perfect year is a very rare thing.
Every challenge that comes along, you just deal with it, because you don't really have any other choice.
So you figure it out.
