Bez, NM Strongly Disagree

... were important earlier ...

January 28,2004

Deep personal mystical and practical experiences of unity with all creation inform my actions. The ten commandments were important earlier in my life but not now. Because of this and the history in our country of hanging persons with different spiritual beliefs, such as Mary Dyer on Boston common, we must maintain the separation of church and state.

Marco Anto, CA Strongly Disagree

... not be ofended ...

January 28,2004

the best way to not be ofended by religious believes other then ours is by not enforcing ours to others

Roy, CA Strongly Agree

... foundation of man-made laws ...

January 28,2004

Absolutely! It's the foundation of man-made laws.

Elaine, CA Strongly Agree

... foundational to our country's ...

January 28,2004

The Ten Commandments are foundational to our country's rule of law.

Russ, CA Strongly Agree

... The truth hurts ...

January 28,2004

If I migrated to another part of the world I would not be offended by the popular religeous culture I found there. I would go back where I came from if I did not like it. What or who are the 10 commandments hurting? The truth hurts.

Pat, LA Strongly Agree

... built in America ...

January 28,2004

America is a free country. If mosques are allowed to be built in America, why cannot we display the basic commandments of God in public?

Denise, AZ Strongly Agree

... foundation of the country ...

January 28,2004

Yes, a monument to the Ten Commandments should be allowed to stand in a state courthouse. This country was founded on freedom of religion, yes, BUT our founding fathers were Christian. The monument is there to show the foundation of the country, not to say this is what we HAVE to believe, nor to say this is what beliefs we ALL espouse.

Sarah, AK Strongly Disagree

... blatant symbol of Christianity ...

January 28,2004

I am an agnostic, and I also consider myself to be a moral person. I believe this country was founded on the idea that people from diverse countries, ethnicities, and faiths (or non-faiths) would be welcomed as equals. But when such a blatant symbol of Christianity is displayed at a courthouse, I feel left out...I suspect many others do as well.

Separation of church and state is necessary to ensure that all Americans have the freedom to live by their own belief systems, without the government pushing one faith over another. In many countries around the world, there is no religious freedom, and I'd rather our country didn't head down that path.

Christina , CA Strongly Disagree

... government building ...

January 28,2004

Our nation was founded not on "religion" but "freedom of religion". The role of government is to protect that freedom. A Judeo/Christian-specific symbol is not an expression of "freedom of religion", but exclusionary, and has no place in a government building.

Ronald, OR Strongly Agree

... bedrock of the Christian ...

January 28,2004

Our nation was founded on the bedrock of the Christian Bible, to say otherwise is just silliness. Why let today's prejudices against mainstream Christianity rewrite parts of our history and heritage? If the Ten Commandments have gotten us this far, why pull them now? I don't think that having them there in the first place can honestly deeply offend anybody, or if they do, then the very Constitution itself, and the currency we use would as well. Each speak of the Christian God, and place our nation in His hands.

Melody, CA Strongly Agree

... teach us to respect one another ...

January 28,2004

I absolutely agree. The Ten Commandments are basic and teach us to respect one another and our higher power, however we choose to view God. Many of the world's religions have similar values. They teach us social values and are our moral guide. Without them we flounder without a foundation and subject ourselves to social chaos and moral and physical destruction.

Manuel, CA Strongly Disagree

... why the ten commandments ...

January 28,2004

why the ten commandments? why not the code of Hammurabi or the codes of Solon?

Merle, CA Strongly Disagree

... religion is private ...

January 28,2004

religion is private between a person and thier god. Public is between people and their government.

Kathy, WA Strongly Agree

... freedoms, truth and honesty ...

January 28,2004

America is a country established under the mantle of God according to the Bible. Because of that we have freedoms, truth and honesty. That is the United States of America, under God.

Phyllis, OR Strongly Agree

... very fortunate country ...

January 28,2004

Hopefully our judges are weilding their enormous power after prayerful contemplation. Since there is only one God, we are a very fortunate country to have that God as the foundation of our society.

Lawana, AZ Strongly Agree

... without the laws of our land ...

January 28,2004

What a chaotic country this would be without the laws of our land, which are based on the ten commandments.

Sandy, CA Strongly Agree

... part of our country's ...

January 28,2004

Absolutely! It is part of our country's heritage.

David, OR Strongly Agree

... foundation of our judicial ...

January 28,2004

The Ten Commandments constitute the foundation of our judicial and legislative systems. To disown them now is absurd.

Burnie, OR Strongly Disagree

... no good has ever come ...

January 28,2004

I think the hypocrisy of a number of the people you interviewed is beyond the pale. Religion is a very personal thing and should be kept that way and who is to say that there aren't more than one or none. As far as it goes no good has ever come from the marriage of church and state. That is the marriage that should be prevented.

Howard, CA Strongly Disagree

... NAME OF RIGHTIOUSNESS ...

January 28,2004

ORGANIZED RELIGION (NOT GOD) IS THE GREATEST FOMENTOR OF SUFFERING AND SUBJUGATION IN THE WORLD. IT IS SAFE TO SAY IT HAS NO PLACE IN LAW AND GOVERNMENT. GOD LIVES IN THE HEART AND SPIRIT NOT IN THE HANDS OF THOSE WHO WILL USE IT WILL DO EVIL IN THE NAME OF RIGHTIOUSNESS.
