... total disregard and Only ignorance
...

Dear Readers;
I agree that the Ten Comandments should be left in all court houses. Unfortunately we have people(Liberals) that only want to make a name for themselves with total disregard and Only ignorance and selfrighteous.

My value before the bar of justice is no less than my Christian brothers and sisters. Therefore I do not accept one religion being hallowed above others in a place where justice is supposed to be impartial.

... With the Commandments exposed to us we are a safer ...
January 27,2004
|
The Ten Commandments was removed from a courthouse and he is just replacing what belongs there. The Ten Commandments represent Faith, Freedom and Standing Together to treat others with respect and equality.
Other countries have religion but their leaders do not practice respect nor equality amongst their people. When monsterous brutality and degregation of citizens lives is common within a country then religion is NOT being practiced and these countries would love for America to have the same laws. With the Commandments exposed to us we are a safer and happier people.

... alienating the very core
...
January 27,2004

I agree with the statement above for many reasons. I think one thing many of us forget when discussing this issue is the founders fathers made the separation between church and state law during a time when the thought of not believing in any god would have got you burned at the stake. If they were here today they would realize things have changed and religion is much to personal and individualized to be endorsed by the entire nation without trampling and alienating the very core idea this law was founded on, to stop opression. I think we have already broken some of the barriers of opression with the laws for equality. This just one more step that must be taken. By presenting any religious symbol in a public place makes an assumption that in our nation you must believe in god (christian god at that) to be a good american. Which is opressive to people of all religions including those who do not believe in god at all. State needs to be nuetral. The only way to do that is to allow anybody or anything to make their mark or to exclude all religious symbols and leave it up to the individual which is where it should be.

... God is freedom

The commandments form the basis of our laws and constitution, ignoring this will only deteriorate the freedoms our ancestors worked and fought so hard to establish and protect. God is freedom.

... no more display
...
January 27,2004
|
We should no more display the Ten Commandments in a government building than the Five Pillars of Islam or the Eight Paths to Enlightenment of Hindusim or the "Six Secrets of the Crystal of Zarnak". This is what all of this business boils down to...If state and religion are going to mix, who's religion do you use? I say, don't use anyone's. Keep the State free of ALL religions.. that way everyone gets offended equally.

... afterward are based
...
January 27,2004
|
This is the original law, given to us by God Almighty, and the basis on which laws afterward are based, including our own. Why wouldn't we acknowledge the first law, the origin of our laws today? Of course it's appropriate - it's the judicial branch (that's pertaining to the application of laws, right?)

These are Commandments handed to us by the Creator. They are the basis for Truth and moral human behavior and the basis for our laws. What better place to display them?

... moral laws ...
January 27,2004
|
If the Ten Commandments are displayed in public, then any other religion should be allowed to place their own set of believes in the same public place. I would love to see the Wiccan Rede, the teachings of Budda, or a few verses of the Koran along side the Ten Commandments. I'm sure all religions feel they have some moral laws that all people could live by.

... or no faith must
...
January 27,2004
|
If I moved to, or was born in a country that was founded on a certain religious principle, and the gov. did'nt force or threaten people to beleive in that principle, or faith, then whats the problem. People that have a different faith, or no faith must be, "as the left likes to say" as tolerent toward the majority that follow the faith principles that the country was foundered on, as they scream for tolerance for themselves. So many schools and large universities were established on the judeo christian faith, from the foundations of this country. And no more of this deist nonsense. A few founding fathers maybe were deist, but for every letter or artical that is sited for the founding fathers being deist, you can find hundereds of letters and statments that show that the founders were christians and beleived that this country was a christian nation. For just as there is the tyranny of the majority, there is also the tyranny of the minority though law.

... clearly unconstitutional
...
January 27,2004
|
The posting of a monument to the Ten Commandments in the Alabama courthouse was a clearly unconstitutional, demagogic act by a very political Chief Justice of the state Supreme Court. The most reprehensible part of the Chief Justice's action, and the part that caused his removal, was his refusal to obey the lawful order of the Federal court to remove the monument. This behavior by a justice of the state's highest court shows an indefensible disrespect for the law which he is sworn (under oath) to uphold.

This country was founded on the word of God. If God is taken out we lose our morals.God is the one who gives us direction to live by.God is our creator and he knows what is best for man. That is why we have his laws to live by.

... an issue for the People
...
January 27,2004
|
Amendment I.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridiging the freedom of speech, or of the press,... etc.
Amendment X.
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constititution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
Opinion:
It seems to me that this is an issue for the People to decide, and has no Constitutional basis on what the Federal Government legislates. The first colonists of what has become the United States of America were seeking a place where they could exercise, without reprecussion, their religious beliefs, or were individuals of questionable character, given a second chance (Christian principle) via the opportunity to be colonists in the "New World". It's the People's choice - as in "government of the people, by the people...".

January 27,2004

In Canada the Bible is still used to take your oath to tell the truth when on the stand before a judge and the judges themselves take an oath of office calling upon God, and in Ontario they start each session of the district court with a prayer service.

... How arrogant is
...
January 27,2004
|
There are 71 different faith groups belonging to The Interfaith Alliance with many more faith groups represented in these United States. How arrogant is one view to place itself above all the others!
The error is in the ignorance of the belief that our nation was conceived by Christian forefathers when, in fact, they were deists.
This nation was peopled by immigrants who sought freedom from the oppression of others' tyranny of any sort, including others' religion.

... speakers are referring
...
January 27,2004
|
It is rather interesting that in every discussion regarding the role of religion, i.e. christianity, in civic life, I invariably hear of references to the role that christian doctrine played in the founding of this great nation. Could it posibly be that these speakers are referring to the Colonies? It appears that those holding to such claims are wholly ignorant of the very real role of Enlightenment thought in the construction of our Republic.
I simply cannot believe that we are having this discussion at a time when we have witnessed firsthand where this particular kind of passion leads. We have come a long way as a species thanks to the genius of our forebears, let us build monuments to their genius instead.

The ten commandments are not strictly a religious issue, they are a common sense basis for a good working society, and yes our laws are based on the TEN COMMANDMENTS.

... Isn't this the role
...
January 27,2004
|
The ten commandments reflect universal values of love toward God and neighbor. The Law in the Pentateuch was written to bring justice to a people who needed guidance in how to be fair to one another. Isn't this the role of our justice system anyway?
