... we have adopted in our law
...
January 27,2004
|
The rational for our revolution against the British was that governments are not instituted by God, but, instead, by men. It the former, rebellion against government would be a rebellion against God. Our government was based on a belief that religion, while of the utmost importance, is not a governmental function. The Ten Commandments are a set of religious principles some of which we have adopted in our law. All can honor them, but that is an individual and not a governmental perogative.

The truth of the matter is that whether we like it or not, the ten commandments govern us all. there are penalties for every infraction stated in the ten commandments.

... too many gods
...
January 27,2004
|
There are too many religions, with too many different gods. They all have different beliefs and we cannot allow this separation to occur in our governing body, from the statues in government buildings to the government in a womans womb. This is supposed to be a Democracy where we are all free to worship as we please. Whose god is going to be in charge? There are just too many gods.

... They blur the lines ...

The 10 comandments have no place in any courthouse. They blur the lines between church and state, and having them there are truely Un-American.

... why not remove them both?
...
January 27,2004

The people who had the statue built did so in a time when giving Bible sermons in the classroom was considered all right. We should be over that by now: we removed one, why not remove them both?

A Hindu doctor saved my wife's life. His earnings should not be taxed to promote Judeo-Christian teachings.

... It's not about YOU!
...
January 27,2004
|
I cannot imagine how offensive and arrogant this appears, not only to believers of different faiths, but to the originator of those commandments. If you want to pay homage to your Lord, work for peace, justice, and equality. Meet people where they are, not drag them to your opinions. It's not about YOU! Why is it so necessary to be EXclusive, when Christ was all about INclusiveness.

... God gave us these laws
...
January 27,2004
|
"This book of the law (10 Comm.) shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success" (Joshua 1:8) The 10 Comm. are summed up in one- love God and love your neighbor- the first 3 of the 10 laws deal with GOD, the rest deal with others. God gave us these laws to show us we can't keep it and can't earn God's favor by being good and moral. That's why the law was given in the Old Testament, and that's why Jesus came and FULFILLED the law in the New Testament- He met every requirement whereas we as sinners did not. Americans, God really does love you, if you were only able to see....

... a HUGE monument should be built
...
January 27,2004
|
The Ten Commandments are a good thing right? I mean, what's so bad about having a law that forbids murder, sexual immorality, envy/covetousness which leads to robberies, murders, and hurting others? What's so wrong about not lying? What evil is there in honoring your parents? Do you really hate the weekends that much that you don't want to rest? Do you really like God so much as to say "God****" and take His name in vain? And what is the crime committed when putting the only one true God first, and not rather money, women, self, since God is really good anyway? I think a HUGE monument should be built, what are we waiting for? Hurry up and build it!

Our country was founded on the basis of pursuit of happiness and in god we trust. Lets all re-read the original constitution and not twist it.

... crossed over the intent
...
January 27,2004
|
As stated, I do NOT think that a MONUMENT to the 10 Commandments, as was attempted in Alabama, should be allowed in a State's Courthouse. The intended "religious" expression of the monument, as conveyed in it's prominent location, it's grandeur, it's singularness as well as n statements by it's owner, in my opinion and feelings, crossed over the intent of "separation of church and state".

I wish that every person could read in the bible where it says to honor mans laws and Gods laws. The Ten Commandments are a part of Gods laws. so why not put it in a courthouse. Where it belongs.

... why not display them?
...
January 27,2004

If our Nation was founded on atheisim or another religion besides the Judeo Christian religion then they should be displayed along with the 10 commandments. However, our laws were based on THESE laws so why not display them?

... so afraid of the Big ten
...
January 27,2004
|
Why is everyone so afraid of the Big ten? You don't have to be a genius to realize that this great country was founded on moral principals. What better place to display the top ten than in a courthouse? Lets just throw out the ideas like thou shalt not lie, steal, murder. Just think of it; we would no longer need our court houses. What a savings! I say what a bunch of idiots!

... too closely identified with the Judeo-Christian
...
January 27,2004

The only way I would agree with this is if monuments to all religious faiths were included. The Ten Commandments are too closely identified with the Judeo-Christian hertitage NOT to be considered overt religious symbols of two particular faiths.

... strong separation of Church and State
...
January 27,2004
|
The United States can only maintain its unique democratic character through maintaining a strong separation of Church and State.
Religious texts have been routinely displayed in the government buildings of theocratic states like Saudi Arabia, Israel, Iran and the Taliban's Afghanistan. The moment that the Ten Commandments monument is sanctioned, we as a nation take a step closer to becoming that which we oppose.

... should be able to stand
...
January 27,2004
|
Not only should the ten commmandments be allowed to stand in a state courthouse they should be able to stand as a moral reminder wherever. The laws of this country were founded on the ten commandments by Christian Founding Fathers. The monument does not bound anyone to become Christian nor is anyone penalzed for not being Christian. Why object to a concrete form of ideals that promotes formation of man's conscience and law, order and the common good? The Declaration of Independence of this great nation gives acknowledement to the Chtristian God, should we remove that historical document,& the writings of Thomas Jefferson from U. S. History and all our museums? That reasoning is wrong. The "heartland" flatly rejects this way of thinking. We need better judges to interpret the law correctly.
