I listened to this panel discussion last evening and was dismayed to note that the role (actual or potential) of nurses and in particular, advanced practice nurses, was not mentioned one time. With all due respect to the medical profession, neither was there any professional nursing representation on the panel itself! I am a nurse practitioner, faculty person and daughter of a mother who died the slow agonizing death of Parkinson's disease. It was me who often intervened as an advocate for my mother in the crossfire of miscommunication that frequently occurred as she dealt with the ups and downs of her disease. That was over ten years ago. I fear that young people and men who might be watching this program will not see nursing appropriately represented relative to the immense contribution they are making already to care of the chronically ill. Nor will they hear anyone supporting nurses being a part of the solution to what is and will continue to be both an extraordinary opportunity to serve and an immense burden to bear with and for our society.
