Zoe Albright
Las Vegas, NV

In January, 2001, my 79 year-old father became ill and needed to have a double bypass operation. His carotid arteries were also seriously clogged but that procedure had to wait. Following a very successful bypass operation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN, my father began suffering small strokes, which became increasingly more serious. Further testing revealed that my father had an astrocytoma -- a brain tumor. This diagnosis was made in early February, 2001. The only treatment for this condition would be radiation, which would only slow the growth of the tumor.

The doctors gave my father two months to live. My father chose to go home to his house in the beautiful woods of Minnesota, where he could live out the remainder of his life with his wife of 53 years and enjoy the beautiful earth he had worked for so many years. (My parents have lived in the same house for 38 years). Today is November 26, 2001. My father is still alive, and has been at home all this time, being cared for. Thank you for airing your series on chronic illness and day-to-day struggles of care givers.
