I am 61 years old, a retired Denver firefighter and I have a chronic illness called emphysema. Emphysema is a destructive lung disease caused mostly from smoking. I have progressed with the disease to a point where I am now being tested for a transplant at University Hospital in Denver, CO. As this disease progresses you become more and more dependent on supplemental oxygen. Everyday things become harder and harder to do. You can become depressed and just feel like giving up. That's kind of where I was with this disease when I found EFFORTS (Emphysema Foundation For Our Right To Survive - www.emphysema.net). Since joining I have learned from EFFORTS how to live with this disease. I exercise everyday on a treadmill and some weights. I am able to do more stuff today, even though the disease has progressed, than I could 2 years ago. I have learned that you can live with emphysema and enjoy many things life has to offer.
