ROBERT S:

Charity's up to the individual. Depends on how you feel. 'Cause some charities you give to, people run off with all the money. 'Cause some person you might see—that you give to—eats with it. So what would you rather do, put something in a box for charity, or give someone something to eat? What's the difference?

NEEDCOM:

I think people doubt they can make a judgment about someone else's need.

ROBERT S:

So therefore, if you feel that way about it, then give what your heart tells you to give. But it don't mean that it's going to be used that way! 'Cause people are always saying they'd give to the right cause. This guy and his wife were in charge of a whole church and they ran out with $100,000 of the church money. I mean, that was a Catholic church!

STEVE:

Charities are ripping people off. You see that on national TV. That money ain't reaching to the people. It ain't reaching. A certain amount of money is reaching ... Everything got different levels in life.

LANETTE:

I feel that if they really want to reach out to a person, [giving to] a homeless person is just like giving to a charity. 'Cause it's two of the same kind. Like a church, where homeless people go there, that they feed. It's the same thing! But let me tell you, that charity stuff, that's a fraud. It's all a fraud.

GARY:

A lot of people aren't aware of the fact that a lot of charities rip off the poor. I'll give you a perfect example: The Salvation Army. Okay, if you are the mother of three children, and you're having a hard time making the ends meet, and somebody comes up to you because you're trying to do something decent and get clothes out of it. And they tell you the Salvation Army gives out clothing for free, cause they just came with a whole truckload. You go to the Salvation Army, they start charging you money. So a lot of these charities, like the men's shelter, they ask for food, but what they serve at the men's shelter is garbage. They take the donated food for themselves. So they're not aware of this fact. But I can understand their point of view, giving to a charity, because a charity is supposed to be respectable.

DONALD:

It's the same thing, you know. It's all about helping. They're doing some good, that's good. But they don't know really where their money's going. 'Cause the person that they're giving the money to might be giving something altogether different with it. But charities are good, don't get me wrong. But there's some charities that's not good. 'Cause like I say, you never know where the money's going.

Like take for instance, the Million Man March. That money was supposed to be for the homeless, right? I haven't heard hide nor hair of that money since the parade. Nothing. I'll say what I think happened to it. It went into Farrakhan's pocket! Went straight into Farrakhan's pocket, went into somebody's pocket. It didn't go to the homeless.

EASY:

And then what are the charities going to do with it? See, charities are separated by what their cause is. You have homelessness, hungriness, joblessness, and all these other things. Charities don't service these people! Charity goes for these causes! So who's gonna service these people? HUH? You don't got no charity for homelessness, do you? It's for the set crowd. "My crowd over here." Come on, let's be real, here! These people over here don't see none of that charity money over there for hungriness, homelessness. "This is my crowd, take care of my people!"

RICHARD W:

Well, let your conscience be your God! There's a lot of people that give to charities, they don't receive it! I read an article not too long ago, where there was given to charity millions of dollars, and they used it themselves. That's a Catch 22 situation! Some people at the charity organization, they get greedy for themselves. I read an article about these children abroad overseas need dollars, and the money and the food never gets there!
