Calderoni was a sub-commandante in Mexico's Federal Judicial Police and during Carlos Salinas's anti-drug campaign he worked with Mexican law enforcement and, as an informant for the DEA and FBI.

However, his real employer was the Garcia Abrego family (see Gulf Cartel). Calderoni left Mexico in the early '90's and he subsequently alleged connections between the Salinas regime, Raul and drug traffickers.

Mexico attempted to extradite him (claiming he made $400 million from the cartel) but was unsuccessful.
