While HIV diagnoses have fallen globally by roughly 20 percent over the last decade, here in the U.S., the numbers have held relatively steady at around 50,000 new infections each year.
This interactive map illustrates the scope of the problem across the country by showing the percentage of each state's population living with HIV/AIDS in 2008.
Click on a state to learn more, including a year-by-year breakdown of AIDS diagnoses by race/ethnicity and by method of infection.
