Hey, revolutionaries.
My name is Cecelia, and I'm here to tell you a little bit about the 2013 biographical film “Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom”.
Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom is based on Nelson Mandela's 1994 autobiography, A Long Walk to Freedom.
The book profiles Mandela's early life and the 27 years he spent in prison following the Rivonia Trials.
In June of 1964, Nelson Mandela and eight others were convicted of “recruiting persons for training in guerrilla warfare for the purpose of violent revolution and committing acts of sabotage.” They were also convicted of “acting in ways to further the objectives of communism”, which had already been outlawed by 1950.
This law was designed to actively suppress voices of dissent against the National Party, the dominant political party in South Africa throughout the 1960s.
At the time of the trial, Nelson Mandela was serving as a chairman of the militant wing of the African National Congress or the ANC.
The objective was to put pressure on South Africa's National Party, the government body imposing extreme segregation of the races.
Mandela and his comrades planned to carry out acts of sabotage, bombing military installations, power plants and telephone lines at night, when civilians were not present.
The ANC deemed that this would be the most effective way to further their activism, while avoiding unnecessary death and injury.
During the trial, Mandela defended the actions of the the African National Congress.
This is important to note that the ANC military cell was formed only after years of nonviolent political protest.
It wasn't until the Sharpeville massacre that the ANC escalated to sabotage.
On March 21st, 1960, police opened fired on a group of anti-apartheid protesters in the Sharpeville township.
The official casualty count was listed as 249 dead, 69 of those were children.
Eyewitness accounts stated that many of those who lost their lives were shot in the back as they attempted to flee.
This scene is depicted in the film and it is difficult to watch.
The filmmakers included photographs of the events to give the audience a glimpse into the real life violence.
The Sharpeville massacre is just one instance of violent oppression under apartheid.
From 1948 to the early 1990s, South Africa operated under apartheid systems in which the white minority had ultimate political power.
Some 3 million native Africans were removed from their ancestral homelands and forced to live in racially segregated townships.
Segregation continued to escalate until 1987, when the National Party, fearing a race war, entertained peace negotiations with the ANC.
When watching this film, it is important to remember that Nelson Mandela and his compatriots were arrested for protesting in favor of equal rights.
Above all, Mandela insisted that while one individual person is weak, the collective is stronger together.
Keep this in mind as we move forward to the general election this November.
That's all I have for you today, folks.
Remember to tune in Saturday night on KSPS PBS to watch great films like Mandela, A Long Walk to Freedom and many others.
