"News organizations tend to overdo reporting of sensational stories like the Kobe Bryant trial and are more concerned with ratings than substance."

... to meet our needs ...

September 16,2003

The emergence of cable media has solidified and perpetuated the 24 hour news cycle. Most of us know when we've had enough of the same story and will simply switch the channel or switch the medium. Most of us are true multi-media consumers that taylor information consumption to meet our needs. We no longer need to be subjected to the liberally biased press. We go get the information we need, process it and move on. The biggest problem with conventional media is they no longer tell the facts of the story. They tell it from a biased corporate or political point of view. This includes PBS, unfortunately.

... is only the Internet ...

September 16,2003

A short report of an alleged crime, scandal or titillating celebrity situation is more than sufficient for me. I don't want to hear about it 14 times on every channel! I don't really care what J Lo is up to these days.

I am far more interested in knowing how many US GI's have been wounded in Iraq and flown to Andrews Air Force Base. No reports on that on ANY channel, yours included! Or, the number of Iraqi civilians who have been killed during and after the invasion. To obtain REAL information about what's going on in the world, there is only the Internet. I used to count on PBS but feel they have let us down.

I'm old enough to remember when PBS had NO corporate sponsors and actually had programs featuring working people and their issues, much more in-depth coverage of international issues, bills in the Senate or House, etc.

PBS is still far and away the best: Bill Moyer's NOW, Frontline, POV, Wide Angle and, hopefully, Flashpoint.

I will continue to watch. It sure beats Fox(triple YUCK!), MSNBC(double yuck) and CNN (yuck!)

... freedom of choice ...

September 16,2003

I found your discussion on wearing the American Flag pin very disgusting. What happens to freedom of choice when it concerns something like that. You act as if it is some big problem because you choose to wear the flag-and yet in the poll in this article it was shown that the majority thought it was OK. I think a citizen in this country should be able to show their patrotism without being ostracized for doing so. We who want to wear a flag or wave a flag are not criticizing you who do not. You should show us the same civility.

... Too much entertainment ...

September 16,2003

It has gotten very sicking. Everything is over the top except the things or issues that are really important in our lives, such as education that's being taugh to the test and not the children's minds or well being. Justrification for the war in Iraq that now my grandchildren and their children will have to pay for, if we live that long. Freedom of screech that being taken away as I write this. My list is very long on things that is not talked about. Too much entertainment that's always over the TOP.

I strongly agree, especially with the cable news media. The tendancy is to whip the story to death regardless of the content of the story. I do not hear my associates discussing these stories, only the media personalities.

The media tends to be ANTI-BLACK, in general. You can't find ten folks, who know what Jeffery Dahmer's killer looks like, because he is a black man. Meanwhile the picture of the WHITE KILLER of the pedophile priest, has been plastered on all t.v. stations. The "news media" is racist and is controlled, operated, and presented by racists.

Technology (Cell phones, wireless transmission, etc. provides for concise coverage of ANY event. It's up to the network editors to show the "right" stuff.

Of course they over-report the sensational stories to get ratings. I want to know where they get the ratings, because nobody ever asked my opinion, nor that of anyone I ever talked to. I change the channel a lot. Thank heaven for HGTV, TLC, and Animal Planet.

I agree that the big news media always seems to make a story bigger then life really is. I am concerned that it's like a lot of people say "it's because of ratings", mainly because that means we don't get the whole truth, or it's only partial truth and fabricated portions that is taking out of context.

Could someone please ask Bryant Gumbel to act more thoughtful? Perhaps if he toyed with his glasses occasionally or if he grew a goatee that he could stroke while pretending to think up probing questions. No - I've got it! He needs a pipe. That affection would be just the push he needs to convince the world that he's an intellectual.
