"News organizations tend to overdo reporting of sensational stories like the Kobe Bryant trial and are more concerned with ratings than substance."

... are not customers ...

How did the O.J. trial, Elian custody battle and Clinton scandal get such great ratings if neither I nor you nor hardly anyone else either of us have spoken to watched it? How were they so popular while every poll taken showed that most people hated them and desired termination of coverage? Simple:
The ratings system used by the media is designed to respond not to the vast bulk of viewers(Whom watch only a moderate amount of television, and a variety of programs), but to a niche market of people that devotedly watch certain programs almost all day, the news is pandering to a tiny percentage of the viewership that religiously follow their coverage, the same people that buy scandal-sheets at the supermarket checkout. and simultaniously "Disenfranchise" the rest of us from the ratings process.
In addition, the media aren't after our money. Remember that we viewers showing disrespect , we are commodities. They[the media organizations] don't get a penny from us, not directly at least; all of their revenue comes from advertisers.
The only exception to this rule are pay-per-view TV and, most of all. PBS. PBS had almost all of it's tax funding jerked in the mid-1990s, and no one has spoken of it since then. That is why PBS has been degrading to this day; the stink of advertiser money.

... I'm tired of it

The "Nets" don't and that's what I watch. Over reporting is mostly a function of when the incident happens during the day or night. I turn it off if I'm tired of it.

... come and go in trends ...
September 17,2003
|
The sensational stories seem to come and go in trends. Last year, child abductions were all over TV and it sounded like kids were disappearing left and right. It's still a problem as always, but the major outlets have moved on to other things.

... propaganda works
...
September 17,2003
|
The problem isnt that the news lies, it is that they omly tell us about a very few select things that are happeniing in the world. This is because the things they tell us must be able to sell products. (Grab Ratings)
Because of this, we are uninformed, and we are also spoon feed pablum to keep us under the spell of the corporations and the government.
It isn't a conspiracy, it is just the way propaganda works.
Most Americans dont even realize the fact that Sports is not News.
Why is this? The answer is that Sports is presented as news, the reason is that it sells product.
We are being brainwashed by omission of facts not by lies!

... nothing sacred ...
September 17,2003

Is there nothing sacred? Is there nothing that won't be done in the name of ratings? Wonder when they will stage a Ladies Night or Bring A Friend event. The first 300 viewers to tune in recieve a free pizza or something like that.

... suspicious argument ...
September 17,2003
|
The media always puts forward a specious argument that the viewers want this kind of information based on the fact that the viewers are watching it.
If the story is on every single news show they have to watch it or stop watching TV.

... sing the same tune
...
September 17,2003
|
I have given up on News except for local stuff and use the internet for a more balanced source such as BBC News, African news and a english speaking newspaper out of Lebanon and also Israel. The one cable news I do look at is C-Span which has been very good about covering the speaches of the Presidentual canidates.
Most of the rest of the news media tends sing the same tune. As far as the news fensy, when one happens I start looking at the bills going through congress and usually find something that puts the average american at a disvantage. But than I hate reality shows as well. I do like some of the news on PBS and programs like yours, NOW and Wide Angle.

... famous-name trials
...
September 17,2003
|
Sensational news is blown out of proportion, to the exclusion of other news that people need to know. Besides, our justice system is severely compromised when famous-name trials cross over the line into entertainment.
