"News organizations tend to overdo reporting of sensational stories like the Kobe Bryant trial and are more concerned with ratings than substance."

... effect of a capitalist
...
September 17,2003
|
Todays news media is an example of the effect of a capitalist system on an honerable tradition. News media outlets have a responsibility to report factualy and responsably about important events of the day; not to pander to the rules of "ratings". Imagine if medical professionals gave people what they "want" rather than what they need. Media outlets have a similar responsability to give us our "medicine" whether we like the taste or not.

... overdo stories
...
September 17,2003
|
New organizations overdo stories they believe to be 'news', because it increases ratings and the bottom line is money these ratings create.

... we're missing
...
September 17,2003
|
Obviously sensational stories are overdone, or it wouldn't be an issue worthy of discussion. However, maybe we're missing the mark; instead of asking whether News plays up sensational stories, maybe we should acknowledge that they do so and figure out what, if anything, to do about it. Otherwise, the question itself becomes just another example of, well, sensationalism...

... easier to be told
...
September 17,2003
|
I do not believe much of what I hear or read in the news. Why? Because I read more indepth information from a wide variety of sources. American news is presented in a bent that appeases the American audience. I think it is easier for the public to be told what to think than to think for themselves and the news moguls know this and cater to the nonthinking majority.

... I want to be informed
...
September 16,2003
|
When I watch the world news, I want to be informed on issues that affect the world. Whether a celebrity did or did not rape someone or hearing a thousand times the gruesome details of a murder is not world news. People dying of AIDS, government's abuse of powers or distruction of rain forrests-that is news. J Lo or Brittany Spears is tabloid and have no place on CNN.

... increasingly sensationalistic
...
September 16,2003
|
I believe that the news media is growing increasingly sensationalistic and can't be trusted to cover the news that matters so much anymore. They were doing stories on Gary Condit and shark attacks when terrorists decided to blow the World Trade Center to kingdom come on September 11, 2001. Not to be sycophantic or anything, but public television and radio are our best sources for broadcast news. If Congress would only develop public broadcasting into a medium free of all corporate sponsorship, like the BBC, Jim Lehrer and his crew could do a show that would rival the BBC's best news coverage.

... media is not just interested ...
September 16,2003
|
After Columbine, Kobe, and the Oklahoma City trial in Denver, It is obivous that the media is not just interested in profits, but also are pointed by those who make the profits and what ever political group happens to own and buy the broad casts, what is lost in this is the balanced view that tells both sides,or more than one side, and even the world view, both sides tell you what you want to hear, spin the results and actually start more contoversy and yes even wars. THe regular folk of this country need to stand up and say enough.

... practically unknown

The Lynch story is a perfect example: The heroic, guns blazing rescue story was everywhere. The hohum truth about a wreck and the Iraqis that saved her life is practically unknown.

... media takes too far
...
September 16,2003
|
Although I believe the media takes too far, people do tune in. If you really believe that the media takes these stories to far, don't tune in.

... We get "show biz"
...
September 16,2003
|
I stopped watching any of the news programs because they tend to be more like talk shows covering an "enquirer" type article. I do not think
we get the news like we used to. We get "show biz" and personally, I do not care about people's stupid choices. I watch pbs most of the time.
