"News organizations tend to overdo reporting of sensational stories like the Kobe Bryant trial and are more concerned with ratings than substance."

... we need a program to communicate our views ...

WONDERFUL PROGRAM. PLEASE COME BACK AND DO WEEKLY PROGRAMS. THE MEDIA IS NOT SERVING THE PUBLIC INTEREST AND WE NEED A PROGRAM LIKE THE ONE YOU DID TONIGHT TO HELP US (THE PUBLIC) COMMUNICATE OUR VIEWS TO THE ELECTONIC MEDIA. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. THANK YOU FOR THE FRESH AIR.

... pandering, the ugly truth ...

September 16,2003

It's a self-serving cop-out to blame the American consumer for the quality of the news reported. Of course ratings increase when the news is sexy or salacious, that's pandering to the lowest of human impulses. If the news organizations and media outlets were motivated by a "higher calling" to serve the public, then we would see greater diversity and quality of news. The ugly truth is that media outlets are in business to sell advertizing. News is just another way of getting "eyeballs" or market share, and so they will pander to the basest human instincts to attract that audience. To say that the audience deserves lousy news is to ignore the media's culpability for pandering.

... Edward R. Murrow would be ashamed ...

September 16,2003

Concerning the story about the men and women who rescued the trapped miners, Bryant Gumbel stated that it seems “these people want the media, but only on their terms.” Mr. Gumbel, “these” people are not the ones who trample your yard for weeks on end wanting to know what you will be wearing to the interview. “These” people do not call you 24 hours a day just to ask, “how do you feel?” “These” people do not follow you to work and chase you all the way to the door of your business. “These” people do not call relatives at all hours of the night. “These’ people do not let your pets out of the yard trying to get a picture. “These” people do not care about your grades or dates from high school. These people just want to be with their families and friends to help adjust to what just happened to them. I think it is very arrogant of Mr. Gumbel to assume that these people just want fame and press only on their terms when it is the media that will not leave them alone! When “these” people are ready,
Yes, the press these days are more interested in Madonna wanting another child than the fact that Mr. Cheney’s Haliburton Inc. won the King’s Ransom of jobs concerning the rebuilding of Iraq. The press is more interested in interviewing the “boots” of the TV show, “Survivor” than the fact that the heads of the EPA buried memos from their own people that “Ground Zero” was not yet safe! Start reporting Real News!! Edward R. Murrow would be ashamed of today’s media!
Thank you.

... true journalism isn't common denominator ...

September 16,2003

Catering to the common denominator is not what true journalism is about. $ is not going to solve the real goal of informing the public.

... media's purpose is to sell product ...

September 16,2003

Television "journalists" fool themselves when they talk about the media as serving some "higher purpose". Their sole reason for existence is to attract an audience and sell product at the commercial break. All of the media distortions and pathologies discussed tonight stem from that fundamental truth.

... pro wrestling or Jim Lehrer? ...

September 16,2003

Do we believe in Jefferson's marketplace of ideas or not? Media companies are companies--their raison d'etre is to make $$. Demand drives the news, and companies respond, and there's no alternative. The only alternative is to have some sort of centralized control over the messages we get. But as it is, we're dependent on the tastes of Joe Sixpack, and if he and his millions of buddies prefer Fox news and pro wrestling to Jim Lehrer and Chekov, then we're stuck with it. Well, except for PBS and cable.
