I felt as if I'd never left. The five-year absence (during which a great deal changed in the world) only intensified my initial impressions of the place. The city is busy, hot, densely packed, dusty, chaotic but also welcoming. With a population of 16,000,000, the capital of Egypt is both Arabia's and Africa's most populous city. The city is also the world's oldest tourist destination. To generations of outsiders Cairo has proven both compellingly exotic and astonishingly accessible.
