Flights arrive at night, and the airport cabs are rattling, kitsch-festooned Peugeots and Datsuns from the era of Sadat. Drivers apparently believe that using their headlights will slow them down. A quick, careening ride leads through the desert outskirts, past the tallest mosque in Islam (or so the driver tells me) into the heart of the city.
