My friends back home had implored me: "Please be careful over there ..." Most left unsaid their judgment that terrorism in the Arab world made such a trip a foolhardy venture. I felt a little nervous too. But then I stepped off the plane and into the hot, spiced air of a Cairo summer night. "Where you are from?" asked a man next to me in the jovial, jostling passport control queue. Before I could even answer, he clapped me on the shoulder, winked and shouted, "Welcome in Cairo!"
