With per-capita annual income around US$1,500 and a 55 percent literacy rate, Egypt is on par with its North African neighbors but conspicuously lagging behind Israel (approximately US$15,000 and 96 percent).

One of Cairo's fanciest new buildings belongs to the Faisal Islamic Bank. The bank offices command a view across miles of dusty unreconstructed slums.
