Many Egyptians had been outspoken against U.S. intervention in Iraq by the time I arrived in summer 2003. President Hosni Mubarak warned that "as a result of this war, instead of having one [Osama] bin Laden we will have 100 bin Ladens." Popular antiwar/anti-U.S. protests had rocked Cairo in the spring, prompting Mubarak to declare a state of emergency.
