Many Egyptians had been outspoken
against U.S. intervention in Iraq by the time I arrived
in summer 2003. President Hosni Mubarak warned that
"as a result of this war, instead of having one [Osama]
bin Laden we will have 100 bin Ladens." Popular antiwar/anti-U.S.
protests had rocked Cairo in the spring, prompting
Mubarak to declare a state of emergency. |
