In busy Ramses Square, a 3,000-year-old statue of the pharaoh Ramses II stands caged. Authorities plan to move the statue to a new site in the countryside to lessen the degrading effects from exhaust, vibration and vandalism. Modern Egyptians seem to have a love/hate relationship with their ancient forebears, admiring their orderly ways while decrying the pagan beliefs of pre-Islamic infidels.
