frontline: making babies

Discussion: What are your thoughts on the brave new world of reproductive choices and technologies?

Dear FRONTLINE,

I'm not sure if I feel better to know that I'm not alone, or worse to know I'm not alone. i am just beginning the whole "infertility tango towards fertility". I'm frightened and desparately trying not to be optimistic. I never asked for this. I have lived my whole life to prepare myself for the task of raising children. I have done all the right things, and yet . . . That which challenges us only makes us stronger. I sure do hope so.

Aiken, SC

Dear FRONTLINE,

I feel that an individual or couple should be helped to realize their dream of giving their love to a child "of their own." There is nothing unethical about that.

Boston, MA

Dear FRONTLINE,

I can't believe the selfishness of these people in the show tonight. This is the ultimate message of we we have come as a people. This "I want a baby" no matter what attitude is sickening. The reason that you can't reproduce is because nature and evolution, the very reason that you are here, has decided that for some reason, you shouldn't reproduce. You would be well advised to heed that decision. Adopting a needy child would fill your "need" for a child and provide a wonderful life for another human being. But I guess that that doesn't fit into the self-centered, it has to be brand new, and ours, lifestyle that you have crowned as "normal".

Dear FRONTLINE,

I STRONGLY disagree with what these people are doing. They have no ethics. No moral standards. There are thousands upon thousands of children in orphanages and in foster care systems in the US, not to mention the millions around the world.

PEOPLE do not make babies, GOD makes babies. And homosexuals do not deserve to raise children.

They're sick. I think it's sad what these people are doing and I'm VERY disappointed in PBS for even giving these people recognition.

Dear FRONTLINE,

Your documentary, "Making Babies" reminded me of scary science fiction scenarios. To think that this is all possible right now when money seems to be valued more than human life and 'adult' happiness more than the well-being of the children, is more frightening than any sci-fi movie I've seen.

I was particularly horrified by the couple that mentioned the information packets they received did not include literature clearly defining the possible problems they might face making babies this way.

I imagine these companies to have a corporate atmosphere where marketing their money making scheme outweighs the little embryonic lives that they discard.

It would be nice if the family planning clinics and the fertility clinics could cooperate to save lives through adoption, rather than abort babies and create new babies that have a 1 out of 4 chance of survival. your statistic My guess is that someone might have thought of that, but since there's not as much money to be made, the idea was discarded.

King of Prussia, PA

Dear FRONTLINE,

Extremely interesting. The interests addressed seemed to be focused more on the parents and clinics; not on the child. Two points needed to be made to balance this piece:1 every human being begins at fertilization, as 100% of human embryologists clearly state; 2 about 75% of infertility is caused by scar tissues from previous abortions and sexually transmitted diseases. If the present rate of abortions and STD's were drastically reduced, there would be very little need for infertility treatments - with all the accompanying traumas, injuries, defects, spending scarce resourses, ethical dilemmas, etc.

Dear FRONTLINE,

I have just finished my second IVF cycle it failed, as did the first. I am 39 years old and I do not want multiple babies. I don't want a "clone" or any other sensational type of offspring. I just want a normal, happy, healthy baby like most other people get natuarally but for which I have to pay dearly, emotionally and financially. Most stories on infertility focus on the sensational issues i.e. septuplets and not the average couple who just want to be parents. Also, it is still a subject about which people are relunctant to discuss, probably due to feeling uncomfortable about the ethical issues or just ignorant as to what is involved.

Infertility is a lonely affliction.

Billerica, MA

Dear FRONTLINE,

Having a child is the single most wonderful thing two people who love one another can do. And any form of help available to do so should be explored.

dearborn, mi

Dear FRONTLINE,

I feel that the technology is great IF it is used wisely. Every case should be viewed on a case by case basis.

I don't believe it should be used to create the "perfect" human but it is helpful to eliminate harmful diseases.

Kathy Langford

Dear FRONTLINE,

Let's be real. This country has been engaged in selective breeding starting with the breeding of slaves. Why is that people the buyers of sperm and ovaries refuse to acknowledge the fact that they are engaged in selective breeding?
