A glass of tea costs 50 piastres -- about US$.08 -- whether it's served plain, with fresh mint or with milk. An Arabic coffee ('ahwa), cardamom-roasted and chewy thick, costs 75 piastres. Each cup is tallied with one of these chits.

The shop is open 24 hours and nobody is remotely concerned about "turning tables." The café is not for consuming so much as for socializing. This is the living room of Cairo after all. Correction: This is the living room of Cairo's men.
