Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipIt's native plant sale day today at Penn Hook Park in South Bend, Indiana, and we're going to learn all about what is a native plant sale.
So let's check it out.
I'm with Sandy now, who's the coordinator of this great event.
And we're going to learn more about it.
Sandy, what's going on behind us?
What's happening.
We are at Penn Hook Park in South Bend, Indiana, and we are having a wild one South Bend plant sale.
And of course, while one South Bend is the organization that does what.
Well, we encourage the community to plant native plants, and it's all for biodiversity and insects and birds.
And just a healthier planet.
This plant sale is the fall plant sale.
And you do a couple a year, right?
Yes, we do two a year.
We do one in the fall and one in the spring.
The spring sale is usually around April May, so you can get your plants going early, and then you can come in the fall and plant them late.
And I think sometimes people forget falls a great time to plant.
It's a really good, especially for native plants.
It's a really good time.
So who's here there?
I see lots of plants and I see lots of people buying plants.
We have eight vendors that are here from the area that are selling the native plants.
And then we also have community partners that are encouraging and kind of follow our mission with the wild ones on the vendors, what kinds of I see people cart now boxes.
So what kinds of things are people buying?
Yeah.
So yes, we have a lot of native grasses, a lot of ferns, wild vines, lupines.
We have it all in asters, shrubs, even some small trees.
People, are selling here.
And of course, the vendors are super helpful.
If you have questions about where should it grow or what, you know, what size area do I need?
They can all answer questions.
Just really, really helpful.
Especially for those of us that just want to buy everything that we see, which is like me.
And I mean, yeah, it just they're just all so fun.
You mentioned that there's some other folks here who are kind of supporting the mission of native plants.
So what kinds of things are some of the other booths that are here?
Yeah, we have the Audubon Society.
We have, people who talk about invasive plants that are here, one that's talking about different bugs and moths and different things that we would want in our garden.
Yeah, yeah.
So people can get information about not only plants and things they can put in their yard or their garden or their woods or whatever.
But then also maybe how to get rid of invasive species, which is part of the bigger picture, right?
Part of the bigger picture.
So if people wanted to learn more about when the plant cells occur, which are a really nice way to get to a lot of native nurseries in one stop shopping, it's like a native plant mall, right?
This is like a native plant mall.
Where would they find out more information about Wild One, South Penn's plant sales?
Well, we have a lot of times we have posters and postcards that we put out in advance to at different merchants.
And then we also have a website that you can get on the South Bend Wild One's website, and they'll have all the information that you would need.
And that website is South Bend dot Wild One's dot org.
Yes.
So you can check that out.
And also the organization.
Well one South Bend has monthly programs, informational programs, visits to native gardens, hands on workshops, planting days.
It's a really active organization.
So if you're looking for native plants to buy, be sure to check out the Wild Ones.
South bend plant sales twice a year.
Sandy does a great job with a core of volunteers and some great vendors to help you plant your native gardens.
Thank you Sam, thank you very much.
Remember, you can find your own outdoor elements when you visit area parks and natural areas.
We'll see you soon.
