How Were Fossil Fuels Formed?

Fossil fuels formed millions of years ago. Different kinds of coals, oils and natural gases formed as dead plants and animals decayed. Scientists refer to these remains as organic matter. In this narrated QUEST slideshow, you will learn more about how one fossil fuel – “shale gas” – formed in the Earth thousands of feet below certain parts of the United States.
