Paul Dunbar’s poem “Sympathy” contains the famed line “I know why the caged bird sings.” Maya Angelou used Dunbar’s line for the title of her acclaimed 1969 memoir. She read a portion of Dunbar’s poem in a 1994 episode of the Twin Cities PBS program “Arts on 2.”??
