Many Americans first learned about Elizabeth Alexander when she read an original poem at the 2009 Inauguration of President Barack Obama. Alexander believes that as a writer and teacher it’s her job to break what she calls “the comfortable silences around race.” Elizabeth Alexander recited her poem “Race” at a reading in the Twin Cities sponsored by the Givens Foundation in 2012.
