I guess I am somewhat cynical in the way I evaluate how news is covered. I feel there never is enough of the real facts presented for me to make informed desicions on issues. I feel news stories are designed for the majority of the viewers and not nessesarily for educating the public. It's about the ratings now. The prime time news "magazines" give stories a spin to achieve the highest sensational value. How do I know what has been objectively reported?

... political correctness ...

September 16,2003

Is anyone objective? The media does seem to have agendas. Social engineering and glossing over certain issues is a concern.

Political correctness has taken absurd proportions. Real opinions are slanted to agree with certain objectives.

... news sold like fast food ...

September 16,2003

News is supposed to be balanaced and fair. News should only reports facts. And yes News is generally boring.

Unfortunately in the US today news programs must generate revenue and therefore they have to have flair, character and offer a perspective in order to entertain (and keep the advertisers happy). In reality these programs are not 'The News' they are 'A News'. A version of the News that the program directors wish to report and therefore the reporting is subjective.

So, remember that every program that presents news will have a bias. Therefore I recommend to read as many reports from as many 'news' organizations in order to determine a balanced report. This is where the Internet comes into its own. But then its not so glamerous, takes the investment of time to acquire the news information, and therefore unfortunately I think most Americans aren't interested.

News is now sold like fast food.......can't wait for the class action trying to explain that we didn't realize the Fox was really biased with the best of them !

... how we have fallen ...

Oh, boy! During the war we saw the imbeded journalists doing a credible job, but afterwards they became cheerleaders for the policies of the administrations never seeing the obvious problems, etc. NBC has one of their own experts looking for weapons of mass destruction, give me a break! How stupid is that? Media consolidation and the descent of news into entertainment has doomed us into a bunch of news dominated by sensational news and junk. I notice the Today show now has news for 3 1/2 minutes in the morning at 7 A.M. Everything else is fluff! I feel very sorry for the dead pregnant lady in California, but should I have to hear about her daily? Should her fate dominate the news? What about Jessica Lynch? Was there ever a more made by the media story? She does not remember anything? she never shot her gun. She was injured in a wreck caused by her hapless leaders. Now we have a hero! Soon to be a millionaire hero. Lord, how we have fallen!

... dominant ideology ...

September 16,2003

The dominant ideology in any society is very much produced by those with the social resources to make their view of reality heard and defined as "truth." Consequently, corporate news typically demonstrates the conservative bias and world view of white, upper-class males. This, far more than the occasional journalist who writes untruths, is what makes the so-called integrity of corporate news suspect. Additionally, the agenda of ratings/profit over simple factual reporting, the focus on sensational stories, and the lack of focus on stories of interest to a diverse audience make mainstream news sources untrustworthy, not to mention frequently irrelevant to large portions of the population.
