Corporate profits have a great deal to do with what we see and don't see on tv.

... reporters as "journalists"
...
September 16,2003

I am amazed by the number of stories commencing with, "Some say..." Clearly, simply the reporter using the news organization to sell personal opinion. I am very skeptical of writing from reporters describing themselves as, "Journalists."

... irrelevant

The major news media, including cable -- AND -- PBS
has become increasingly irrelevant to my life. I find most of my news in the Alternative Press and on-line. It is exceedingly more trustworthy than the celebrity-driven and biased television, radio, and print media. Gotta shape up, kids!

... generally have confidence
...

I generally have confidence in the reporting from most of the large media outlets with the exception of FOX NEWS. One thing I noticed the other day, OPRPAH had ARNOLD on this week with MARIA. How can she do this with the California election only weeks aways. Does this not show her hand on who she wishes to win the election. Does she miss the fact that this serves ARNOLD's motives and places him in a better position than the others running can only hope to have. I know she does a lot to help a lot of people with her Star Power but no one in the media really wants to take a look at her motives or her agenda. Lately I find her boring and lump her with the likes of FOX NEWS as she does not hind her bias in her reporting. FOX NEWS at least is honest in the fact that they pretend to report the NEWS but OPRAH flies under the radar with her touchy feely shows with a tear in her eye and an agenda in her head.

... Power, privilege, and elitism
...
September 16,2003
|
The state of main stay news has become deplorable. Reporters evolve into on-the-air personalities and eek out celebrety status. The anchors and executive management have lost touch with reality.
Power, privilege, and elitism are purveyors of The News.
I see and hear no difference between news celebrities and politicians. The longer they're in the game, the more distorted they become.
Fox News is cranking up the heat because their on-the-air personalities ('even' with the huge incomes) don't come off as social and political elitist. Socially and politically aware, but, not elitist.

... role of the media is to report the news
...
September 16,2003
|
Your own interviewer on the program had a participant saying that the role of the media was to "counteract" the government. Silly me, I thought the role of the media might be to report the news!
However, you know and I know that no aspiring reporter advances by simply reporting the news. The objective of any interview is to lead the interviewee and to "make the news." Connie Chung comes to mind.

... little variety and not enough in-depth information ...
September 16,2003
|
Facts and balanced editing do not drive what is selected for media presentation these days; ratings and subscriber fees do. Thus, censorship, both in what is SELECTED for discussion, as well as the MANNER in which news is discussed, is alive and well in the U.S. Media. Media outlets cannot risk offending the viewing/listening/reading public, nor can those who pull together the news (editors and reporters) risk offending the very powerful and influential people that employ them, so what you get is very little variety and not enough in-depth information in the mainstream media these days.
Fortunately, PBS is an exception, because it is a non-profit and not ratings driven. Thus, [we] should have more TV, radio and newspapers that are funded by the public, and the caps on media ownership should be lower than they are.

... impact of corporate ownership

I rely on BBC news to get what I believe to be the most unbiased viewpoints for world news. I do not trust the impact of corporate ownership on US news organizations.
