... greater concerns

News reporting is constrained by human interests as in other pursuits. News reporting is flawed by the need to subsume thoroughness, objectivity, and relevence to greater concerns for recognition and career.

... example of bias
...
September 17,2003

News always seems to be somewhat biased, but the real extreme example was the "IN BEDDING" of the reporters with the soldiers. This was a gross example of bias and greatly swayed the public for a war that is just now being questioned for legitimacy. Why were the French, German and Russians so lambasted for posing the same questions at the most appropriate time? Why did the media, in various forms, promote this bias?

... simply propaganda

I live close enough to the Canadian border that I listen to world news on Canadian stations. It has convinced me we are being fed a very select menu of news eliminating any real controversy. Fox news is simply propaganda presented as news.

... shaping the nations

Quite the contrary. It is unfair, biased and most defiantly opinionated. There are only a few cable stations that seem to obtain confidence with its listeners. The others seem to think they are the responsible for shaping the nations viewpoint and egos enough to believe they are.

... little confidence

I have little confidence that I feel I am not getting the truth from PBS,NBC,ABC,CBS because there is always an obvious left leaning political agenda. Changing will be difficult because those in charge of the news content are oblivious to anything different. Good luck Tom Brokaw.

... I'm amazed

We simply have to be discriminating in our choices. For me, that means NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and watchdog programs like On the Media. It also means the Lehrer News Hour on TV. Traveling around the country, I'm amazed that so many of the "well-informed" families I stay with are NPR fans.

... self-parody!
...
September 17,2003

It's hard to take seriously "Flashpoints" asking this question when the program itself is employing cheesy, flashy, style-over-substance production gimmicks to keep our attention, as well as intrusive and slipshod editing. Talk about unintended self-parody! Talk about the problem? The program ILLUSTRATES the problem!

Hard to take seriously what seems to have become a platform for Hollywood hype. That's NOT news.

... great distrust

I have a great distrust of the reporting of American news organizations. After visiting Europe this spring, I found that there is so much going on that we Americans need to know, that is not being reported here, but can be found in foreign newspapers. Shame on the so-called "free press!"

... absolute confidence
...
September 17,2003

It depends on the news organization. I have no confidence in a news organization which must continuously remind it's watchers they're "Fair and Balanced." I have absolute confidence in news organizations who actually are fair and balanced, such as NPR.
