... What they do is to not report
...
September 16,2003

It is not that the media lie outright. They know that it would be too obvious. What they do is to not report or show things.
Case in point: The peace discussions between Palestine and Israel in the mid-late 90s.
Did you ever see a map of the "generous proposal" Israel made? I didn't. Giving control over 99% of the people to the Palestinians sounds like a major offer and that got a lot of coverage. What they didn't show was that there would be 5 separate sections of Palestine and the Palestinians would have to go through check points constantly.
What they also didn't say was that to get even that much the Palestinians would have to legitimize the illegal settlements and cede them to Israel.
What did get covered? Bill Clinton saying "it is just a matter of negotiation between two parties now". When you give 3 billion a year to one of those parties you can't wash your hands and run for the exits that easily.
There are several shows I like to watch because they do at least talk about these things in depth. PBS News Hour (I have been watching it since the early 80s) and a show in Canada called "Hot Type". Both go into depth more than the usual 30 seconds of sound-bite coverage.
Do the media lie? No. They just selectively cover stories for the most part.

... All "news" is affected
...
September 16,2003
|
Reporters, editors, media owners have agendae with respect to what constitutes "news." Information is socially constructed; thus, the agendae act as a filter for what gets reported, how it is reported, and when it is reported. All "news" is affected by this bias toward the agendae, or, editorial policy. Just as this activity has rules. So, no reality unfettered by the filters (agendae). Sender, message, receiver--all impact the communication activity. Thus, she who controls the power controls reality. Thank You.

... I only watch the people I trust

I only watch or read the people I trust that report the news without bias. As soon as they give their opinions, I know they're not reliable.

... I have concerns
...

I have concerns about what I call "the children of Reagan"--young reporters who combine an uninformed, basically conservative bias with a pleasant complacency. Recently I heard a young Headline News anchor equate union activity with Marxism. He also offerred that Arnold S. might use his prospective election as governor of California as a stepping stone to the presidency (for which Arnold, as an immigrant, is of course not eligible)!

... some sort of hidden agenda.

strongly disagree! just about every news story seems to have some sort of hidden agenda.
take elections as an example. gay marriages and abortion are not real issues! the quality of life of americans is the issue!

... corruption is very real ...
September 16,2003
|
I whole heartely disaggree, corruption is very real and I know for a fact that people in powerful positions who are connected to the U.S. Government want nothing more than to control what individuals in this country and around the world think and believe. Politics is about power and money not kindness and goodwill. Big media and Big government are most definetely in bed a whole lot longer than we have suspected. The word of the day is corruption !!! The truth and reality of life is being hidden and I feel sad for a blindfold is covering my eyes.

... Americans want to believe
...
September 16,2003
|
I have believed for quite some time now that the news to which the American public is exposed is biased and censored. It seems ridiculous to me that certain networks can claim that they report the news in a "fair and balanced" manner and that the American public buys into this. Although to believe otherwise is an attack against one of the foundations of our society. We as Americans want to believe that we have all of the freedoms in the world. To challenge that belief by recognizing that perhaps the information that we receive is not only biased, but are sometimes lies is very difficult. However, I think that is extrememly important to expose the media as a beast since the general public will never believe the truth otherwise.

... don't trust journalists
...
September 16,2003
|
There are too many news stories that appear to be speculative and reports on prognostications by single experts rather than reporting on the facts of recent events (e.g. Apple Computer dead in 1997, Richard Jewel, Elizabeth Smart unwillingly kidnapped).
I am also deeply troubled by the emphasis given to "the-man-on-the-street" interviews.
I really don't trust journalists giving me a single sound bite from an expert and then the journalist giving the detailed analyses on medicine one day and high-technology the next.
