... it is the corporations
...
September 16,2003
|
It's not really the news that is in question as much as it is the corporations behind the news and their PR Company, The US Federal Government Inc. (AKA George Bush Inc). Just think about this: conservative figures place 80% of the world's wealth in the hands of less than 5% of the population. But it is exactly that 5% that hide behind corporations, use lobbyists to push their interests - interests of a small minority - and have their puppets pleading that what is in corporate interest is in the majorities interest. But it simply isn't true. Today we see how quickly the corporations are willing to trade hard working American's in for cheap overseas labor. It's all in the name of profit - 80% of which they retain through their holdings. It's the same rhetoric used in the WTO that has led poor nations to be even poorer. Wake up, America! You're being hoodwinked!

... big business owns the media
...
September 14,2003
|
You have to wonder about the credibility of 40 media organizations siding with Nike to protect big company "first amendment rights". I thought the bill of rights was to protect individuals not companies from the government, but we all know that big business owns the media and has the power in government.

... read international news sources.

I tend to accept that a bias is introduced into commercial news. Aside from PBS and the Monitor, I tend to look for corroborating evidence among several commercial news sources. Its also useful to read international news sources.

... I don't believe what I read
...
September 12,2003

I don't believe what I read much anymore. I think the truth is in there, somewhere but in this country finding the truth is getting harder and harder. We just have to remember to check where the story is coming from and basically do a reality check on our lives.

I still belive what I read for the most part. It's getting easier to real between the lines, however, and figure out what side the writer is taking in his/her reporting. I think the days of the objective journalist are long gone.

... deeply troubled by the Jayson Blair
...
September 11,2003
|
As a journalism major, I was deeply troubled by the Jayson Blair scandal. We are taught to double and triple check our sources but it turns out in the real world it doesn't happen like that. I want to be good at my job and I want people to believe what I write is true to the best of my ability to find the truth. I hope America's faith in the media returns someday.

... I still trust the news

I still trust the majority of the news that I read. I think Jayson Blair and others like him are vicitims of the pressure to get the "big scoop".

... the world has gotten so confusing that I just try ...
September 09,2003
|
I can never really decide if what I am hearing is true or just a concoction made up of loose facts and assumptions. To me, the world has gotten so confusing that I just try to tune it out.
I worry too much that what I'm hearing is all lies and that just makes me worry more.
