Lynne Enman
New York, NY

I have been affected by chronic illness since the age of 14 when I was diagnosed with Turner Syndrome, a genetic disease which results in poor bone growth, hormonal problems, and short stature. At 16 I was diagnosed with juvenile chronic arthritis, although I've had symptoms for several years (no one believed that my joints hurt!) Since then, I've had multiple joint surgeries, including bilateral total knee replacements, and developed insulin-requiring diabetes (which is a common problem with Turner Syndrome). I am working very hard to control my diabetes so that I don't develop complications. I am currently on a huge number of medications (14, most daily, some are weekly) including an insulin infusion pump). I have what I would describe as "adequate insurance coverage" (I work for a stable organization with decent benefits) however, my medication co-pays still exceed $250.00 a month. It's a huge burden for a woman living alone and supporting herself. Luckily I have a supportive family. Luckily I'm able to work, and put energy into helping others. I am on the board of the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States, and put a lot of my heart into working to make things better for families affected by TS.
