Officials worked to open temporary health facilities and cooling booths to prevent heat stroke and other illnesses in the population as temperatures rose past 100 degrees Fahrenheit this week. The heat wave came as Muslims were abstaining from food and water during the holy month of Ramadan. People sought relief in the major port city of Karachi by jumping into streams and seeking shade under bridges.
