In order to avoid escalating tensions with North Korea, the U.S. agreed to South Korea’s request to delay joint military exercises until after the Games. North Korea has responded to past drills by test-firing missiles. Meanwhile, after the International Olympic Committee banned Russian athletes from competing under the national flag for systemic doping, the International Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned doping bans on 28 Russian athletes and reinstated seven gold medals the Russians won in the 2014 Sochi Games. Despite the international drama, the Winter Games will kick off Friday with a glittering opening ceremony at Pyeongchang’s Olympic stadium. After the closing ceremony, the stadium will be demolished.
